New Delhi: India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a relief package for the poor and the needy on Thursday. Reacting to this, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that this is a step in the right direction of the Modi government. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday announced a relief package of Rs 1.70 lakh crore under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana to tackle the Karona virus epidemic and its economic impact. This amount is being given to help the needy.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, saying, ‘Today the government’s announcement of the financial aid package is the first step in the right direction. India owes a debt to its farmers, daily laborers, laborers, women and the elderly who are facing the brunt of this lockdown.

The Finance Minister has taken this step keeping in mind the assistance of all categories of people in the relief package. He has also announced an insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh for doctors and health workers working to tackle the corona virus epidemic.

The Finance Minister said that 80 million families will be given free 5 kg wheat or one kg pulses with rice for three months from ration shops. Sitharaman also announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1,000 each to three crore poor old people, poor widows and poor disabled persons. The Finance Minister said that the government has finalized an economic stimulus package to deal with the 21-day nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of corona virus.
