23 civilians including children killed in car bomb attack in Afghanistan market

Kabul: At least 23 civilians, including children, have been killed in a car bomb and mortar attack in a busy market in southern Helmand province, a statement from the provincial governor’s office in southern Afghanistan said.

The Taliban and Afghan forces are blaming each other for the Monday attack in Sangin district. The Taliban claimed that the army fired mortars at the market, while the army says car bombs and mortar shells fired by the rebels targeted civilians.

The army says there were no military activities in the area on Monday and two Taliban fighters were also killed when a car bomb exploded in the market.

The United Nations has asked both sides to beware of casualties of civilians in the conflict, but according to a recent report it has increased.
