Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals organises a Continuing Medical Education (CME) for Meerut’s Doctors

  • More than 30 doctors participated in the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme
  • Application of 3D printing in Orthopaedic surgery explained to the medical practitioners

Meerut, 18th July, 2018: With an aim to provide education on application and importance of 3D printing in Orthopaedic surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi organised a continuing medical education (CME) programme at Hotel Crystal Palace, Boundary Road in Meerut today. The event witnessed more than 30 doctors who were present to learn the new trends and developments in the field. Dr (Prof) Raju Vaishya, Sr. Consultant – Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals gave details about the use of 3D printing in orthopaedics and its benefits.

Addressing the gathering, Dr (Prof) Raju Vaishya said, “Everyday, doctors face patients with critical and complicated health problems and diseases. To manage such critical diseases effectively, medical practitioners need high-end technologies and equipments. 3D printing technology is surely one of these that is penetrating in the healthcare field at a fast pace. In clinical setting, it is mainly being applied in Orthopaedics. Nowadays, a group of 3D printing-based patient-specific osteotomy instruments, orthopaedic implants have been developed for clinical use. This technology is helping Indian orthopaedic surgeons and technicians to develop innovative medical devices and catch up with their Western counterparts.”

Explaining about the process in detail, Dr Vaishya further added, “3D images of bones can be re-constructed based on the imaging techniques like computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and then the prototypes of the bones can be obtained using layered manufacturing technique (LMT) for teaching, presentation, and surgical design purposes. Development of metallic implants and personalised prostheses is the most important and most valuable direction when it comes to applying 3D printing in the field of Orthopaedics.”

“The application of 3D printing in healthcare and mainly in orthopaedics is experiencing a rapid translation. Only a ‘real world’ clinical translation can reveal the value and future of 3D printing. It provides a great opportunity for the orthopaedic implantable medical devices manufacturing in India to catch up with the advanced countries and provide Indians with an access to advance healthcare facilities,” concluded Dr Vaishya.
