SIDBI partners with Piramal Sarvajal to provide access to safe drinking water via water ATMs
Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has leveraged technical partnership of Piramal Sarvajal, a mission driven social enterprise, to provide safe drinking water in Methavari village in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Under the initiative, Piramal Sarvajal has set up purification-cum-dispensing unit, also known as water ATM to provide an uninterrupted access to affordable safe drinking water. The initiative is a part of SIDBI’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts and is expected to benefit over 2,400 individuals residing in the village. \
Mohammad Mustafa, IAS, Chairman and Managing Director of SIDBI said, “It gives us an immense pleasure to launch safe drinking water facility. We are keen to support drinking water at village/block level. It is satisfying for us to raise the happiness quotient of villagers. This also aligns with our mission Swavalamban as Water operator / Co-ordinator as the society managing it shall be local. This is replicable and can be deployed in any part of country where ground water is contaminated, and community is suffering from poor quality of drinking water.”
So far, the village was dependent on borewell (water was accessible at a level which was contaminated) for its water supply, due to which the community often suffered from water borne diseases. This initiative will benefit the villagers by catering to their need for safe drinking water in the village.
Anuj Sharma, CEO, Piramal Sarvajal, said, “As a part of its commitment to provide safe drinking water to the unserved and underserved communities, Piramal Sarvajal has been undertaking several programs and partnerships over the years. Through this partnership, Piramal Sarvajal has set up purification cum dispensing unit to provide an uninterrupted access to affordable safe drinking water.”
For the village, a co-labelled water ATM card was also unveiled using which anyone having this card can access water from water ATMs for 30 paise per litre. Currently, solar powered, cloud connected water ATMs of Piramal Sarvajal are spread across several states namely, including UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand etc.
The ATM card can be obtained by any villager from a local operator/co-ordinator in the village and any amount can be loaded on it. Purified drinking water is available in these water ATMs 24X7 and using the ATM card people can access safe drinking water from any of these water ATMs, anywhere in country.
